Ask any student how they revise Physics and most will say “past papers”. Ask how they use them, and the answer is usually: attempt the paper, check the answers, feel briefly bad about the score, move on. That is not practice — it is measurement. This guide covers what to do instead, so that every past paper you touch actually moves your grade.

Why past papers beat every other revision method?

Cambridge Physics syllabuses are stable. Question styles, phrasing and the specific traps examiners set repeat across sessions with remarkable consistency. That means past papers are not merely a test of what you know — they are a preview of what you will be asked.

Notes teach you physics. Past papers teach you the exam: the vocabulary that earns marks, how long a six-mark question should take, and which of your “understandings” collapse the moment they are examined.

Which past papers should you use?

The right papers depend on your course. A Level students in the AS year practise Papers 1, 2 and 3 of syllabus 9702; in the A2 year they move to Papers 4 and 5. O Level students use the full 5054 paper set, and IGCSE students use the Extended 0625 papers including Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical.

Always use official Cambridge papers with their official mark schemes. When should you start doing past papers?

Far earlier than most students do. The single most common revision error is treating past papers as a final-month activity.

The correct approach is simple: as soon as you finish a chapter, do topical past-paper questions on that chapter the same week. The concept is fresh, so you find out immediately whether you actually understood it — while there is still time to fix it. Full timed papers come later, once the syllabus is complete. Topical first, yearly second.

The four-step past-paper method

Step 1: Attempt closed-book

No notes and no formula sheet beyond what the exam provides. Once the syllabus is finished, add exam timing. Looking things up mid-question feels productive but teaches nothing about performing under pressure.

Step 2: Mark against the official mark scheme

Not “check the answer” — mark it, point by point, the way an examiner would. This is where the actual learning happens, because you discover the gap between what you meant and what you wrote.

Step 3: Log every error with its cause

Three categories: concept gap, careless slip, or misread question. The fix differs for each — a concept gap means re-learning, a careless slip means a checking habit, a misread means slowing down on the question stem.

Step 4: Re-attempt the wrong questions a week later

This closes the loop. If you cannot do it correctly the second time, the concept was never fixed — you simply read the answer and recognised it, which is not the same as knowing it.

How to read a mark scheme like an examiner

A mark scheme is a list of scoring points, not a model answer. Reading it correctly changes how you write in the exam.

  • Count the points. A three-mark question has three distinct scoring points. If your answer contained two ideas, you were never going to score three.
  • Notice the essential words. Phrases like “per unit mass”, “at constant temperature” or “rate of change of” are usually required, not optional.
  • Read “allow” and “do not allow”. These state exactly which alternative phrasings score — and which superficially reasonable answers do not.
  • Look for error carried forward (ecf). Many schemes award later marks after an early mistake, but only when your working is visible.

💡 This is why you show working. With error carried forward available, a student who makes one early slip but writes clear working can still score most of the marks. A student who writes only a final answer scores nothing. Never do multi-step arithmetic in your head.

Command words decoded

A large share of lost marks come from answering a different question than the one asked. Learn what each command word demands:

Command word What Cambridge expects
State A short factual answer. No explanation needed and no marks for adding one.
Define The exact defining statement, including “per unit …” where relevant.
Describe What happens, in sequence. Observation, not cause.
Explain Why it happens. Requires reasoning and usually a physical principle.
Suggest An answer in an unfamiliar context – applying a known principle to a new situation.
Show that Full working to reach the given result. The answer is provided; the marks are entirely in the derivation.
Determine / Calculate A numerical answer with working, correct units and sensible significant figures.

The error log: the habit that separates grades

Keep one document. Every time you get something wrong, record three things: the question, what you did wrong, and why. Then re-attempt it a week later.

Within a month, patterns emerge that no amount of re-reading notes would reveal — perhaps you consistently drop negative signs in potential questions, or always misread “per unit mass”. Those patterns are your actual revision list, personalised to you and far more useful than any generic topic checklist.

Examiner reports: the resource nobody reads

Cambridge publishes an examiner report after every session, describing what candidates got wrong and why. It is effectively a list of the traps, published in advance of the next paper — and almost no students read it.

Read the report for a paper immediately after attempting it. Twenty focused minutes here beats another hour of unfocused revision, because it tells you which mistakes were common enough that examiners commented on them.

Six ways students waste past papers

  • Doing them with notes open — comfortable, and almost useless for exam preparation.
  • Checking answers instead of marking. “I would have got that” is not a mark.
  • Never re-attempting wrong questions. Recognising a correct answer is not the same as producing it.
  • Chasing quantity. Fifteen papers skimmed teaches less than five marked properly.
  • Only doing recent papers. Older papers contain the same physics and plenty of useful questions.
  • Starting in the final month. By then there is no time left to fix what you discover.

💡 The measure that matters is not how many papers you have done, but how many mistakes you have identified, understood and fixed. That number is what moves your grade.
