Chemistry exam guide: where marks are won and lost

What each topic includes

States of matter

The kinetic particle theory, changes of state, and diffusion.

Atoms, elements and compounds

Atomic structure and isotopes; ionic, covalent and metallic bonding; simple molecules and giant structures.

Stoichiometry

Formulae and equations, relative masses, the mole, concentration, gas volumes, percentage yield and percentage purity.

Electrochemistry

Electrolysis of molten and aqueous compounds, products at each electrode, electroplating and fuel cells.

Chemical energetics

Exothermic and endothermic reactions, energy level diagrams and bond energies.

Chemical reactions

Rates of reaction, reversible reactions and equilibrium, industrial processes, and redox.

Acids, bases and salts

pH, neutralisation, preparing salts, and titration.

The Periodic Table

Trends in Group I and Group VII, the transition elements and the noble gases.

Metals

Properties of metals, the reactivity series, extraction of metals, corrosion and alloys.

Chemistry of the environment

Water, air pollution, fertilisers and climate change.

Organic chemistry

Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, polymers and fuels, with names and structural formulas.

Experimental techniques and chemical analysis

Separation methods, chromatography, and tests for ions and gases.

Common Chemistry mistakes we fix

  • Unbalanced equations, or missing state symbols when the question asks for them.
  • Mole calculations that use the wrong ratio from the equation or leave out units.
  • Vague observations like "it changes colour" instead of "the solution turns from blue to colourless".
  • Describing ionic bonding as "sharing" electrons, or covalent bonding as "transferring" them.
  • Choosing the wrong product at an electrode when a salt is electrolysed in water.
  • Organic structures with missing hydrogens or the wrong functional group name.

How we prepare you for each paper

Multiple Choice
Learn the definitions and tests by heart: many questions are quick marks if your facts are exact. Use elimination on calculation questions.
Theory
Set out mole calculations line by line, give full observations, and use exact chemical names rather than "it".
Practical / Alternative to Practical
Know the apparatus, the tests for ions and gases and their results, and how to make an experiment fair and accurate.

More Chemistry questions

Do you cover the tests for ions and gases?

Yes. Qualitative analysis is taught with the exact observations the mark scheme expects, and practised with past Alternative to Practical questions.

Is the course for Core or Extended IGCSE?

The course covers the full syllabus, including Extended content, so it suits both Core and Extended IGCSE students as well as O Level 5070.

I find mole calculations hard. Will this help?

Yes. Stoichiometry is taught step by step, from relative masses to concentration and gas volumes, with plenty of worked past-paper questions.

Who is this crash course for?

  • O Level & IGCSE students sitting Chemistry in May/June 2027
  • Students who want to finish the syllabus fast and spend the final months on past papers
  • Students who are weak in a few topics and want them fixed before the mocks
  • Private candidates and school students in Pakistan and overseas

How the crash course works
