Probability and statistics

Probability of single and combined events, tree diagrams, averages, charts, cumulative frequency and histograms.

Common Mathematics mistakes we fix

  • Rounding too early in a long calculation and ending with the wrong final answer.
  • Giving only an answer with no working, which loses the method marks.
  • Sign errors when expanding brackets or rearranging formulas.
  • Ignoring the accuracy asked for, such as 3 significant figures or angles to 1 decimal place.
  • Geometry answers without the reasons the question asks for.
  • Forgetting that probabilities change when items are picked without replacement.

How we prepare you for each paper

Non-calculator paper
Practise written methods for fractions, percentages and standard form until they are quick and accurate.
Calculator paper
Keep full calculator values until the last step, and know how to use your calculator for statistics and trigonometry.
